Due to the washouts and mudslides caused by last week’s atmospheric river prompted the closure of nearly 50 miles of US 2.

Washington State Department of Transportation closed Dec. 10 between Index (milepost 35) and Coles Corner (milepost 85). Then, on Dec. 11, the closure of US 2 was extended to include Tumwater Canyon on the eastside (milepost 99).

Crews on Dec. 12 cleared part of US 2 on the westside to Skykomish (milepost 50). US 2 remains closed between milepost 50 and 99.

“Throughout the state we are still very much in response mode, while developing the repair projects we can,” said Lauren Loebsack, communications manager for the Washington State Department of Transportation, in an email. “On US 2 Stevens, we have secured a contractor and are finalizing the plan for emergency contract work. We’ll have a better idea of timelines soon.”
