On a recent Tuesday, more than 100 students from Tahoma High School in Maple Valley walked across the street to Elk Run Farm to get hands-on experience on what it takes to grow fruit and vegetables on a farm.

Those students are part of Tahoma High School’s Plant Science class. They spend time throughout the school year helping with projects on the five-acre farm that was part of a former golf course. Elk Run grows fruit and vegetables for food banks that comprise the South King County Food Coalition.

“I like to be able to go out and contribute to this community while learning more about plants,” Tahoma High School junior Taytum Smith said while removing weeds.
