Washington state legislature tackles food security
Public hearing about food security strategy scheduled for Thursday.
A series of bills being considered in the state legislature will help develop food strategies and help farmers partner with food banks and schools.
“How do we promote food security for every Washingtonian,” State Rep. Kristine Reeves questioned. She is chair of the State House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.
Rep. Reeves is one of the sponsors of several bills that will help farmers provide agriculture products to food pantries, encourage public schools to purchase locally grown agriculture products and develop strategies that expand institutional purchasing of Washington grown food.
One bill, HB 2238, authorizes the Washington State Department of Agriculture to develop a strategy for statewide food security to end hunger, reduce diet-related health disparities and increase agricultural viability and supply chain resilience.
