Growing food throughout Ballard – VFW partners with Seattle urban farm for gardening program
King Conservation District supported Spatula Farms through its Seed Grant program.
Veterans in Ballard are looking to develop their green thumbs.
The Ballard Eagleson VFW Post 3063, located on Market Street, is partnering with Spatula Farms to establish 15 raised garden beds on an unused portion of the Post’s property.
“The interest in doing gardening is with the younger generation,” said Joseph Mesa, who is the quartermaster with the VFW Post that recently celebrated its 100th year. He said the gardening will attract younger veterans who find time to work in the garden while they are being busy with their families and developing a career.
Mesa said the raised beds were installed in February and VFW members and volunteers started planting lettuces, tomatoes and other vegetables in April.
They are working with Spatula Farms to get the community garden off the ground.
