Retiring Tilth Alliance director shares thoughts on smaller, family-owned farming in Washington

Melissa Spear, Executive Director at Tilth Alliance, is retiring.
She guided the sustainable food-system organization after Tilth Producers, Cascade Harvest Coalition and Seattle Tilth, merged to form Tilth Alliance.
“When I joined Tilth Alliance, I was inspired both by its history of significant impact and its forward-looking vision of a more sustainable, healthy, and equitable food future,” Spear said in an open letter to the community that appears on the Tilth Alliance website. “Over these past eight years, I have seen the organization grow even stronger through the work of our staff, board, volunteers, partners, donors, farmers, gardeners, educators, advocates, and neighbors.”
In a separate email, she shared her thoughts on ways to support smaller family-owned farms in Washington.
