Snohomish County approves data center moratoriums in rural areas

Skagit County and City of Seattle enacted similar moratoriums.

Snohomish County is pausing approvals of data centers to provide time to develop regulations.

The five-member council last week unanimously approved a six-month moratorium on the construction of data centers in unincorporated areas of Snohomish County.

“This will give us time to thoughtfully craft a policy together as a council for what we want to see as permanent regulations,” Snohomish County Council member Nate Nehring said during the June 24 meeting.

Snohomish County lacks comprehensive regulations that address the siting, development, or operation of data centers that protect county lands, waters, natural resources, natural environment and community from impacts of data centers according to the county’s staff report about the emergency moratorium.
